AI in Government Contracting: Practical Leverage Without the Hype

Start with the work, not the tool. The productive question isn't “should we adopt AI?” — it's “which of our workflows consume disproportionate skilled labor on repeatable structure?” In most contracting firms the answers are consistent: proposal development, executive reporting, meeting documentation, research and analysis, SOP maintenance, and knowledge retrieval. Respect the constraint that makes this industry different. Contractors handle sensitive information under obligations most AI vendors have never read. The first artifact of any serious AI adoption isn't a tool subscription — it's a data policy: what information may touch which tools under what conditions. Firms that establish this early move faster afterward, because every subsequent decision has a rulebook. Firms that skip it either stall in fear or sprint into risk.

Consistency beats cleverness. The difference between a firm that dabbles and a firm that compounds is standardization: prompt libraries, playbooks, and reviewed templates that make AI output consistent across the team, rather than dependent on whoever happens to be good at it. AI without playbooks is a talent lottery. AI with playbooks is infrastructure.

Keep judgment where it belongs. In consulting-grade work, AI drafts, accelerates, and organizes — but conclusions belong to accountable humans. The firms getting this right use AI to remove the labor between expertise and deliverable, not to substitute for the expertise. Their customers get the same judgment, faster and more thoroughly supported.
